California now has state tax withholding on real estate sales unless you meet the requirements of one of the exceptions (e.g. if the property was your principal residence, that is an exception). See the FTB Form 677 for a detailed explanation of the exceptions. If you are claiming an exemption based on principal residence you can fill out FTB Form 593-C.
